Look at me

I was once a home of comfort

Giving protection to the young

As they lay huddled inside

With leathery skin

And sprouting downs

Which light feathers

Will soon become

I warmed them from the wind

Kept them cool from the sun

And offered space for daily living

I existed happily

Hearing their first chirps

A smile on my lips

As they hesitantly hopped onto the branch

Then my heart warmed with glee

As they tumbled in unceremoniously

On that memorable day

When they took off in flight

With the self assurance

That was birthed within

I awaited patiently for their return

Thinking they will not survive the night

My heart saddened when they did not come

And I realized that I was no longer a home

But merely an abandoned nest

The wind jeered at me

Protect yourself said she

As the leaves fluttered while she lifted me

From the hollow of the bough

Now I only hang

From the fronds of the majestic palm

Who softly murmurs

This is life my dear

Yesterday you shared in life's opulence

While today its demise you see
