Silence impacts the mind more powerfully than words. It is a state of blankness that is rife with possibilities. Emeralda is free to fill in her conjectures but she is aware that they will only reflect her state of mind.

Although her life has diverged from Yvan's, she thinks it uncharacteristic of him not to communicate with her. His silence has created an aura of enigma which leads to a range of interpretations.

Although many critics have voiced their opinions on the meaning of silence, in its absence of words, Emeralda is forced to consider actions she had taken in the past. She had used silence as her cover to break their relationship. Now she is forced to face the possibility of how that silence may have affected him.

She is now confronted with the cold reality of knowing the devastation of silence on the minds of those who are seeking closure.

To be able to put the past behind, one has to be able to communicate. Emeralda knows that she will always love Yvan even though they cannot be in a relationship. Therefore in the absence of communication she is focused on engaging in positive activities in order to bring closure to a love that will forever live in the heart.
