The Dirt Road

I started my journey on this dirt road

Trusting in its way to lead

Rocks jutted through the soil

And my naivete I did lose

The earth heated by the sun

burnt my sole

As in my quest I travelled on

Now many the callus I have to show

Between the rock and dirt have grown

Thorny plants along the way

Which my first lesson taught

Of wariness in life's travel

As sharp thorns agonizingly pierce

The core value of my integrity

This dirt road taught me humility

When I had cause to lose my footing

And most mortified in shame

The dry dust of the road

Swallowed my tears of pain

As I in isolation travelled

Amidst its grit and grime

It taught me how to walk with pride

So there is not a mortal

That can make me lose

The resilience it bestowed on me

I take comfort in her wholesomeness

And the knowledge of her trustworthiness

That even though difficult the journey

This dependable dirt road will lead me

To that destination planned for me.
