The History Lesson

I remember clearly wanting to find

The setting that will my lesson define

So when the students said take us on a trip

I jumped on the opportunity provided

To free myself from classroom confinement

Many are the mistakes we make when young

But much we have gained through these encounters

The teacher must first prepare

I was told

Before the lessons are presented

But the meaning was yet to unfold

When permission I asked of the headteacher

To visit Cottle Church for the adventure

He sarcastically replied

My Dear, what do you hope to find

Although I did not understand

The thought behind his ambiguity

I felt the brunt of his tongue

From the cutting remark that was flung

I expected to find a structure there

With mementos of my forebears

From the painted picture in my mind

Of being a religious sanctuary

And also a place for social assembly

Imagine when the class arrived

The Principal's words echoed true

And much to my chagrin

I had to supervise a rowdy bunch

Much delighted for a free school day

Which proved the longest of my life

And the hardest lesson learnt on site.
