The Power of Silence

Emeralda's experiences have highlighted the importance of Silence in helping to form her perspectives on life. Emeralda, in speaking to a very religious person, whom she thought had her interest at heart, happily confided that she had made an application to a specific organization. This person's chilly silence accompanied by her steady gaze of disapproval, caused the light of happiness to flicker inside of Emeralda. The silence may only have lasted for a second but the chill emanating from it was enough to dampen anyone's expectations. Luckily, Emeralda was not just anyone, she was not the type of person to allow external forces to change her feelings of positivity.

Emeralda knew that the person's initial response of silence flowed from her true self even though her social self, tried to bridge the resultant feeling of uncomfortability. However, her silence had spoken and the trite remark she made afterwards could not change the perceived meaning

In conveying the same news of her recent application to her friend, the reaction was profusely congratulatory. She expressed happiness in the fact that Emeralda was reasserting herself in making an application in her field of competence and rising above her recent challenges.

These two persons responded to the same topic in distinctly marked ways. In Emeralda's opinion, they were microcosm of society in that they represented the general attitude of our society. We have to ensure that the negativity of others do not keep us from striving to achieve our goals.

We also have to learn to listen to the silence of others to understand those profound lessons that are comparable to words.
